I received my law degree from the University of Texas in 1990. Prior to taking the bench, I did trial work in all areas of the law for 22 years. For the last 6 years, I have served as your Justice and I have authored over 600 opinions. I was voted the best candidate for this position by the 2018 State Bar of Texas Judicial Preference Poll.
Technology has improved this State’s criminal indigent defense system. Most counties in Texas have a system whereby pleadings and documents are filed electronically. This allows attorneys hired for indigents to save both billable attorney time and expenses in retrieving documents necessary to properly defend their clients. I believe technology is making equal access to justice for all a more attainable goal.
My highest priority is assuring that the cases on my docket are addressed in an efficient manner. I am cognizant of the importance of the matters before the Court and that litigants are eager to know the results of their appeal. Equally important to success on this Court, is an environment of open dialogue and collegiality with the other justices as all cases are decided by a three justice panel, allowing for fair and well-reasoned opinions to be issued in each appeal.
My appellate knowledge, mediation skills, and work ethic. Highlights of my professional career include 30 years experience as an appellate attorney; more than 2 decades board certification in civil appellate law; 6 years as a Justice on the 13th Court of Appeals; admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court; and a certified mediator in Texas.
One recent technological development is videoconferencing to streamline indigent defense processes. This technology provides the opportunity to improve coordination and timeliness of the state’s indigent defense system in civil and criminal cases, and helps assure that the system meets requirements of local rules, state laws and Constitutional rights.
My highest priority is ensuring equal access to justice, and I take this responsibility seriously. I will work hard to treat everyone with respect, review every case, and hand down fair and timely opinions that are based on interpretation of existing laws as they are written and according to the Constitution. This is the only way every person who appeals a case has equal access to justice.
