The public school financing system must be reformed. In recent years, the burden of funding schools has increasingly shifted to homeowners as property values have increased and the state has cut its share of funding. The state should fund at least 50% of per-pupil public education spending to allow localities to provide relief to homeowners. Commercial property holders should bear their fair share of property taxes, and the state tax code scrubbed for outdated loopholes and exemptions.
1. Enact common sense gun legislation that a vast majority of Texans support, including red flag laws, universal background checks (closing loopholes for gun shows), and safe gun storage. 2. Invest in mental health services in public schools and improve availability of such services more broadly through community resources and expanded insurance coverage. 3. Reduce poverty and reform our criminal justice system to address the ravages of the drug trade which underlie the majority of gun violence.
1. Increase state funding for public schools and reform recapture system, taking burden off the shoulders of individual property holders. 2. Expand Medicaid to reduce number of uninsured in Texas, realize health care cost savings, and benefit from federal government dollars. 3. Make investments in transportation and infrastructure to support continued population growth and needs of modern-Texas economy.
I support formation of an independent districting commission to draw fair district lines. Districts should be drawn in a way to equitably distribute the voice of voters, rather than gerrymandered to concentrate or dilute votes for a particular party. To the extent possible, members of the same community should share a district, rather than being split across multiple districts. Voters should choose their elected officials, rather than elected officials choosing their voters.
Yes, our region’s growth brings great benefits but also new challenges. Residents of unincorporated areas should have the same right to clean air and water and reliable infrastructure as those who live in towns and cities. Consistent with principles of local control, residents who wish to remain unincorporated should be able to do so, in which case counties could be granted authority to protect natural resources and public infrastructure/services and mitigate against unfettered development.
