Experience
For 17 years I have protected children and families as a prosecutor with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office. I have tried over 100 jury trials and handled well over 1000 felony domestic violence cases. For over 10 years in my career, I have been a domestic violence prosecutor which gives me the experience to be a domestic violence judge.

Given my 17 years of experience as a domestic violence prosecutor, I would be a judge who knows the law and will follow the law. Additionally, I will begin court on time and will work 5 days a week unlike my opponent. I will personally make sure that defendants in my court are not lingering in jail without attorneys and without court dates. I will make sure every week that defendants in jail are brought to court and given a court appointed attorney promptly.
County Court #7 is a domestic violence court. We must provide citizens who are accused of assault with drug/alcohol treatment, anger management courses and/or domestic violence prevention programs. We must try to end the cycle of violence one citizen at a time. We must work to make sure that defendants are not just given jail time and a conviction on their record because that does nothing to make our community safer and endangers victims to be put right back in a terrible violent situation.
Judges should NOT be Democrats or Republicans. Political party has nothing to do with following the law especially in domestic violence cases. Unlike Texas, most states do not have partisan judicial races. By having partisan races, voters tend to vote for candidates by political party which results in some good candidates being elected and also some unqualified candidates being elected. We must change Texas law to make judicial races non-partisan.

Accountability and a determined work ethic have made for efficiency in the over 18,000 cases that my Court has heard. I expect my staff to move cases forward and I expect that attorneys for both sides will be prepared for court appearances and that defendants and witnesses will be ready for court dates. Pleas and settlements are encouraged when appropriate to avoid time and expense associated with trial. I am fluent in Spanish and that facilitates many court interactions.
My Court, County Court 7, was created to deal exclusively with misdemeanor domestic violence cases. Guilty parties can be held accountable and there is an opportunity to intervene to stop the cycle of violence by requiring participation in programs as conditions of punishment and probation. These can include batterer intervention programs, anger management, mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment, and education or job training. Choosing these options requires experience in court.
Yes, the judicial elections should be non-partisan. Qualifications, performance and experience should be the criteria, not party affiliation. Judges are public servants, not politicians, and follow the laws enacted by the legislative branch of government which allows voters to choose parties and policies. Judges do not make the law, they enforce the law. Voters would be more motivated to become knowledgeable about individual nonpartisan candidates.
