I’ve been in the financial field for around 10 years in every way you can think of. You have to learn new skills, new rules, laws and instructions. You also have to work with people which is something that will happen everyday in this position. I bring a true people’s perspective to the position where I can use to serve.
A Justice of the Peace is the legal jurisdiction closet to the average citizen. They may issue warrants for search and arrest, conduct preliminary hearings, administers oaths, handle emergency protective orders and some cases perform marriages. They also enforce county and state ordinance, traffic tickets, hot checks and extensively with juvinile matters. They have jurisdiction in civil cases up to $10,000. It’s refferred to the People’s court.

I have been an Attorney for over 20 years. As a prosecutor and a defense attorney I am very skilled at explaining the legal process in a simple way so that all the parties understand. This is particularly important as a Justice of the Peace because most of the parties are “pro se” (not being represented by an attorney).
The duties of a Justice of the Peace include: Deciding on Class C Misdemeanor cases as well as traffic violations, Landlord/Tenant issues such as Evictions, Small claim disputes of $10,000 or less, Truency cases and duties of a magistrate judge. It is not a requirement that a Justice of the Peace have a law degree however it is VERY beneficial, particularly in bigger counties. It’s these types of cases that I have a particular passion for.
