Public education. A decade ago, the state contributed almost 50% of education funding. Today, it contributes less than 40%, as student populations increase. Teachers’ wages have stagnated, spending per student has fallen, and classroom performance has declined. Meanwhile, property taxes have skyrocketed as the state shifts the burden onto local homeowners. If we don't change course and leadership now, the next five years will cause irreparable damage.
We can solve the problem by asking corporations to pay their fair share; we’ve invested billions of public dollars in corporations through subsidies and tax loopholes, now is the time for them to invest in Texans. We can also tap into our rainy day fund, one of the largest in the nation.
We cannot be the second largest economy in America but last in education. The problem is not of funding but of priorities. As a public teacher and the only educator in this race, I will fight to ensure educating Texans is our #1 priority.
Public education is the best investment we can make in our future. It is the most powerful tool Texas has to ensure that we have the educated citizens and workforce needed to thrive. As someone who has gone from a high-school dropout to having an M.B.A and J.D. and her own small business, I know the opportunity public education provided me and can provide for all Texans.
Unfortunately, the opportunities I had are no longer available to many students. Texas public school districts are experiencing growing student populations in addition to a rise in economically disadvantaged students. Meanwhile, the state is diverting limited public education monies to fund expensive tax breaks and advancing private interests, like using public tax dollars for privately operated schools and passing unfunded mandates.
As a public school teacher, I will devote myself in office to reversing this trend and ensuring that all Texans have access to a quality education that gives them the chance to succeed.
Yes. As a gun owner, I believe Texas need to take reasonable steps to minimize the risk of mass gun homicide. I support: (1) investing in mental health programs; (2) conducting additional research on gun violence; (3) broadening and strengthening background checks; (4) conducting annual audits of K-12 school safety issues similar to the audits performed in Virginia; (5) restricting access to assault-style weapons; (6) limiting magazine capacity; (7) cracking down on straw-purchasers who perpetuate gun trafficking; and (8) banning bump stocks.
As the only teacher in this race, I adamantly disagree with my opponent and her support for guns in schools. Koop consistently voted to make it easier for individuals to obtain handguns, carry them into colleges, and minimize penalties for violators. Her NRA "A" Rating sends a clear message to the residents of Texas House District 102, that the gun lobby has her vote. The question is, where is the vote for the safety of educators and students?
No one should die because they cannot afford the healthcare they need. The Texas government, with the right leadership, can do a lot to ensure that this does not happen to its citizens
We must follow the advice of many, including the Dallas Regional Board, and expand Medicaid. As a former Medicaid recipient, I know that it can make the difference between life and death. Not only will expanding Medicaid increase access to affordable healthcare for everyone, it will also create thousands of jobs in the medical industry and ultimately decrease healthcare costs for all.
We can work with the ACA to take advantage of the parts of it that work and strengthen the parts that do not, instead of trying to dismantle it. We must explore new ways to enhance proactive measures to create a healthier populace.
Texas is second strongest economy in the Union, it's time we prioritize the people who are the foundation of this economic force. Texans have earned the right to quality healthcare.

In my opinion, there are two major factors missing from the immigration and border security conversation. It is very easy for politicians, like my opponent, to vilify immigrants, but we fail to consider that these immigrants are answering the demands of businesses. Businesses everywhere in our communities are hiring these immigrants, and asking for more. Donald Trump had done so repeatedly, for many, many years. Both businesses and consumers benefit from the services of the immigrant population, yet we complain that they are here. The last meaningful immigration reform happened almost three decades ago. Congress's failure to do their job and pass comprehensive immigration reform have made matters worse. It's time we elect responsible leaders who will effect change and not run from the issue.
Working closely with immigrant communities and having immigrant parents allow me the perspective and open-mindedness needed to explore sensible legislation while recognizing contributions.
A unique experience from my childhood that shaped who I am today is that of having a child as a teenager. I learned about poverty, the generational consequences of poor decisions, the power of education, the generosity of humanity, and the strength of will. The lessons I learned were difficult and I would never recommend that path to anyone. Yet my journey and travails helped shape who I am today and enhanced the lens with which I see the world. Although I was able to overcome the challenges I created, I understand that many are not able to do the same, through no fault of their own. I also understand the power behind sheer will and determination. I understand the unlimited potential we have when we are committed to achieving our goals. As I did.
I am confident Texans are ready and committed to tapping into the unlimited potential of our children, neighbors and communities. As a lawmaker, I will work hard to ensure we develop this collective potential and that we invest in Texans!!
